Melissa

"Melissa" came to CEP during the 1997-1998 school year with 4.5 credits. She was 18 years old and was in her fourth year of the ninth grade. Her attendance was chronically low, she had no motivation, and she was being influenced by others to use drugs and to drop out of school. Melissa began getting back on track during her first year and, when she took the TAAS for the first time in five years she not only mastered all elements on her first attempt, she achieved Academic Recognition in both reading and math.

Melissa's HISD high school allowed her to continue attending the CEP program. She spent her remaining enrollment in a CEP Honors class, a class for students with significantly improved behavior. Her attendance was 91%. She made significant gains in her reading and math skills and earned sufficient credits to graduate from high school. She is now working and making plans for college.
