A Second Chance
In virtually every middle and high school classroom in America, there are two or three persistently disruptive and low-performing students who compromise student and teacher safety, monopolize the teacher's attention and waste valuable class time at the expense of students in those classes who want to learn. Often these disruptive students:
- Lack the necessary skills to learn,
- Don't perform well on tests, and
- Are at risk of dropping out of school.
They need a fresh start, and individual attention something many of them have never received before. In
their district school environment, these students showed up, on average,
only 50-70 percent of the time. As a result their academic
standing was suffering -- usually functioning well below grade level.
The typical CEP student spends a full school year in the program
- generally180 days. In that time most of our students improve their
attendance by 15 to 20 percent.
Our academic program requires each student to spend at least 10
hours per week focused on reading and basic math skills. After a
year most students improve their reading and math skills by more
than two grade levels and gain the knowledge they need to pass basic
skills tests.
Over the past two school years, the majority of students eligible
to return to their home campus for the second semester of the school
year have remained at CEP, with the permission of or at the request
of their parents.
